4 Ways to Connect With Your Ancestors
As the world feels more chaotic than ever, it’s imperative we connect with our benevolent ancestors. As athletes, we often draw strength from many sources — our training, our teammates, and our faith. But have you ever thought about tapping into the powerful legacy of your ancestors? Connecting with our ancestors looks different across cultures, but their presence and wisdom remain constant. Whether you’re gearing up for a game or facing life’s challenges, invoking the strength and guidance of those who came before us can offer clarity and support. Here are four simple ways to connect with your ancestors before you step into your next game.
What is a Benevolent Ancestor?
A benevolent ancestor is a deceased family member who always had the best intentions for us in their lifetime and continues to hold those good intentions for us today. These family members watch over us, provide guidance, and offer blessings, intervening when needed.
Benefits of Connecting with Ancestors
We are an extension of our ancestors, and when we take the time to connect with them, we can gain clarity and a deeper understanding of our identity and culture. In addition, this practice can help us heal through the grieving process and inspire the courage we need to face difficult challenges. The presence of our ancestors is a reminder that we are never truly alone.
1. Say Their Name
Sometimes, the simplest way to connect is to speak their name. Whether you’re preparing for a game, getting ready to go to bat, or just needing a moment of clarity, say their name aloud. Ask them to be present with you and to guide you in that moment. You might be surprised at how powerful this simple act can be. They will hear you!
2. Engage in Their Favorite Activities
Another meaningful way to connect is by engaging in the activities they enjoyed. Perhaps it’s cooking their favorite recipe, watching a TV show they loved, or visiting a park they frequented. By honoring their memory in these small ways, you create a bridge between the past and the present, welcoming their presence into your life.
3. Carry Them With You
While our phones hold countless pictures and reminders of our loved ones, nothing beats the power of a physical memento. Keep a photo or small item that represents your ancestors in your backpack, wallet, or purse. Look at it often and allow it to remind you of their love, guidance, and unshakable support.
4. Create an Altar Space
Creating an altar doesn't have to be complicated or intimidating — it just needs to be intentional. Find a quiet, sacred space in your home where you can place pictures, candles, and items that remind you of your ancestors. This space will become a place to reflect, ask for guidance, and express gratitude for all they’ve done for you.
